Education: I have attended Salem State University since the Fall of 2006, studying Recreation Management. The workload has not been too difficult, and the courses I have taken towards my major has help increase my overall knowledge of the recreation management field. Fortunately, my experiences with being in the Boy Scouts helped me through some of these classes and multiple assignments. I have completed a Directed Field Study in the Summer of 2013 while working at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. Also during that summer, I was able to get credit for a Camp Administration course I took online.
The experiences I have gotten from working at Philmont Scout Ranch during the Summer of 2012 and 2013 have helped me establish a research project I have developed and have been working on since the Fall of 2012. This project’s title is Philmont Scout Ranch: The Impacts of Working at a Boy Scout Summer Camp on College Age Staff. During the Spring of 2013, I presented the primary findings during a poster session at the Northeastern Recreation Research Symposium in Cooperstown, New York. During the Fall of 2013, I will be collecting post data from a survey I developed and distributed to a participation group. Then, I will be looking for overall themes of how working at this camp has impacted the staff. Then, hopefully, I will be writing a research article based on the findings from the Summer of 2012 and 2013 and present them during a session at a conference during Spring 2014. I am currently looking to get an internship in the Spring of 2014 in any outdoor field. Also network with professionals that are involved in academics or the outdoor education field so I can develop some resources in the future once I graduate with my Bachelors Degree.
Philmont Scout Ranch Cimarron, New Mexico: During the Summer of 2012 and 2013, I worked at the Philmont Training Center as a Group Leader. Basically what a Group Leader does is take care of the participants, while their parents are taking training conferences to become more educated in a certain topic involving the Boy Scouts. We took them on hikes, had arts & crafts, dutch oven cooking, shooting sports, learning about nature, Leave No Trace principles, and overnighters into Philmont’s backcountry for the older youth participants that were 10+ in age.
